Online Education: Pros
and Cons
Online education has been one of the biggest evolutions
that education has had. While some people think that online education is a waste
of time, energy, and money while others consider it a great advantage for people
who do not have the same availability that the rest of learners to spend at
school. In this blog, I will talk about the pros and cons of online education.
Then, I will conclude with my personal opinion on the matter.
Several years ago, online education had been used for
people in the countryside. Many people do not know, but Colombia was one of the
pioneers on that type of education. As some students could not go to the rural
school for different reasons, teachers decided to give the class throughout a
radio channel. In that way, many Colombians could complete their studies.
Nevertheless, some individuals consider it as a waste
of time and energy, since teachers were not paid for those extra hours of labor.
Additionally, teachers spend hour carrying and collecting the workshops and homework
that they assigned to their students, given that some of the learners could not
go to the school to resume on academic activities. Moreover, opinions in cons
to online education suggest that the preparation and the results are mediocre,
since the students don't have a teacher who gives them constant feedback.
On the other hand, some teachers argue that it is a
wonderful profession. In their opinion, online education open doors and closes
the gap that illiteracy creates. It is not fair to take opportunities from
people who try to make progress when they were not born with the same opportunities
as the rest. Some teachers consider that their labor is gratifying when they
see their students succeed in their life. Online education is a real opportunity
to make education equitable and accessible for more population.
In my opinion, virtual education is a real way to
fight against poverty and illiteracy. As a teacher and student, I support this
type of education because it has helped me during all my life, as a kid and now
as an adult. I consider that people who say online education is a waste, it is
because they are not independent enough to learn at their own pace, and need a teacher
to push them. As I am a self-taught student, I can say online education is a
great opportunity for everybody to have the same conditions to succeed in life.
